A Vergers Robes |
Vergers Gowns, Vergers Cassocks |
Typically a verger wears two types of robe. A cassock - similar to that worn by a priest. These come in many colours. Mostly vergers wear a black cassock, but in some churches the cassocks are other colours. I have seen blue green and red being worn. For ceremonial occasions the verger also wears a Gown over the top of the cassock. Often this is black but again other colours are sometimes worn. The Gown is the proper vergers dress. the Cassock is really something to go under the gown. The typical ( if there is such a thing) vergers gown has chevrons on the lappets which go down the sleeves and at the back, in velvet to stand out from the gown. On the black gowns these lappets are hard to see but they are part of the sleeve that goes down nearly to the floor. |

The vergers cassocks are either single or double breasted. The single breasted versions have many buttons down the front. The gowns also come in different styles. Plain or trimmed gowns as can be seen left or sometimes sleeveless gowns similar to a chimere. The Lappets are long sleeve extensions. The Chevrons on the gowns used to be ribbons for tying books onto the gown. |
Having several vergers in our family my Mum designed and made our cassocks and gowns . She also designed and made the badges to go on the gowns. |
